As the NFL season is about to begin, the question of how to place wagers on football matches legally is in the air again. In the United States, there are strict legal requirements, as sports betting is permitted only in certain states. To remain compliant, sportsbooks that operate in the country need to use strong geolocation technology, which verifies a bettor’s physical location before allowing wagers. This system also underlies NFL betting online, so everyone who plans to try wagering should be aware of how it works.

Why Geolocation Matters in NFL Betting

While sports betting is not illegal in the US, it still depends heavily on the actual geolocation of a bettor. Some states, like New Jersey, have embraced regulated sportsbooks, while others, such as Utah, maintain strict bans. The only way to differentiate who can access the sportsbook and place wagers there is to use the geolocation of the visitors. That is what operators actually do. They confirm a bettor’s location before accepting any bets.

This is done with the help of geolocation technology, which is useful both for sportsbooks and bettors. The former can prevent violations that could lead to fines or license suspensions. For users, this adds a layer of protection against illegal activity and ensures fair play. It also eliminates the possibility of registration, placing bets, winning, and then going through the inability to withdraw winnings because of failed KYC (as their billing address is in the list of restricted geos.

The U.S. sports betting market reached record highs in 2025, with Americans wagering nearly $167 billion and generating $16.96 billion in sportsbook revenue. Therefore, geolocation compliance is critical to ensure that wagers are made only in states where it is legal.

How Geolocation Technology Works

Sportsbooks rely on multi‑layer geolocation systems to comply with U.S. betting laws. These systems combine several technologies to ensure that wagers are placed only within legal boundaries, including:

  1. GPS signals that pinpoint outdoor locations with satellite accuracy.
  2. Wi‑Fi triangulation that improves precision indoors by mapping nearby networks.
  3. IP address checks to validate the desktop users’ connection origin.

Regulators such as the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement mandate these checks, so sportsbooks need to prove compliance with state laws. To do this, operators combine GPS, Wi‑Fi, and IP data to validate a player’s location in real time.

Challenges and Limitations

Despite its effectiveness, geolocation technology faces several challenges. Unfortunately, the accuracy of such checks is lower near state borders, as signals may overlap.

Moreover, some bettors attempt to bypass restrictions using VPNs or spoofing tools,  which also distorts. Players using IP-masking tools think they have found a solution to how to bet from restricted locations. However, this is only a temporary option. Brands still detect a real location over time and suspend accounts.

At the same time, legitimate users experience false negatives at times. They can be blocked due to weak GPS or Wi‑Fi signals. Yet this problem is easily solved with address proofs (if a bettor is already registered). Otherwise, sportsbooks risk losing potential customers.

As a result, many destinations try to balance strict compliance with a smooth user experience. That is what MyBookie does, too. It combines a user‑friendly interface with a wide range of NFL betting options. The platform also supports different odds formats to ensure that players in the US and outside the country have as convenient a betting experience as possible.

To sum up, geolocation technology is the invisible referee in the world of betting. It ensures bets are placed legally, protects bettors from fraud or blocked withdrawals, and keeps sportsbooks compliant with current betting legislation.
