Dice games are one of the oldest games in human history. Various forms of it can be traced back more than 12,000 years, but the basic principle behind the game has remained largely the same.

How does a digital dice game work in online casinos? Think of it like a random number generator. Every die roll has a fixed set of possible outcomes, but some totals are more likely to appear than others.

The probability aspect of dice games makes crap games one of the most popular casino games online and in person, because it literally shapes the rules of crap games. Here, we’ll share how probability works in popular dice games using free craps as the focal point in the mechanics. We’ll touch on the rolls, odds, combinations, and repeated events, so read on.

The Basics of Dice Probability

Dice is a game that is played with a die with 6 sides numbered 1,2,3,4,5,6, and this is called a standard die. As the topic suggests, there is mathematics in this game, and the probability of landing on any specific number is 16.67% if the die is fair.

With two or double dice, we are now looking not at just 6 possible outcomes but at 36 combinations. To clarify with an example:

Total of 2 = only 1 combination: 1+1

Total of 7 = 6 combinations

Looking at the math, the formula would be:

Probability = Number of Preferred Outcomes Divided by Total Possible Outcomes

What this means is that although two dice can produce totals from the number 2 to 12, these totals are very unlikely. With this formula in mind, we will see why some dice appear more than others.

Why Do Some Dice Totals Appear More Than Numbers?

In a double dice game, you can only get a total of 2 if you get a 1+1, and the same with 12 (you need to get 6+6). Thinking it through, that is 1 of every 36 possible outcomes and a 2.78% probability, roughly.

This probability increases when the number changes; for example, when you need a total of 7, various 6 combinations can appear. These combinations can be 6+1, 2+5, and 4+3, and vice versa. This makes the probability of a total of 7 become 16.67%.

For totals of 8 and 6, there are 5 possible ways you can achieve them, and both have a probability of about 13.89%. This varying distribution is only attributed to almost all double-dice games.

Probability In Craps Games: What Should You Bet?

Talking about craps games, they are the best example of probability defining a game’s mechanics and rules. Using the probability calculation examples we provided above, we’ll share our best ways to play free crap games.

Low-Odds, High Win Probability

Low-odds bets are best if you’re a beginner or the type of player who wants to make your bankroll last longer. We recommend starting with low-odds craps bets to familiarize yourself with the game, as they give you plenty of room to experiment and make mistakes. Furthermore, it’s still possible to earn fairly decent payouts in craps using these bets.

Here are some of the low-odds value bets in craps:

These bets pay 1/1. The odds of winning on both a Pass and a Don’t Pass bet are 49.3%, making this one of the best bets to place when playing craps. If you’re new to the game, this bet is a great way to gain confidence.

Come bets are similar to Pass/Don’t Pass bets in terms of odds and are placed on any roll other than the “come” roll. The house edge is the same as with Pass/Don’t Pass bets.

Offering a payout of 1/2, this bet has the lowest odds at the craps table. The probability of winning is 66.7%, so the house edge is 2.44%.

Yes, you have a better chance of winning, but the payout means the casino still has the upper hand. Therefore, while it’s not the best overall value, this type of bet offers good value compared to most higher-paying bets.

Place Bet: 6 or 8

You have a 45.5% chance of winning this bet, with odds of 7/6. The house edge is 1.52%, making it the third most favorable bet in the game. You’ll often see more experienced players place this bet. But as you become more familiar with the game, you’ll find it easy to incorporate it into your strategy.

Of all the Place Bet options, it is the one that pays the least, but has the best value from the player’s perspective.

The Field bet: 3, 4, 9, 10, or 11 pays 1/1 and has a 44.4% chance of winning. Despite paying the same as the Pass/Don’t Pass bets, the house edge is higher for this selection. Even so, it’s a popular craps bet. The 5.5% house edge places this bet in the middle of the pack in terms of player value.

You’ll win 60% of the time. The payout is 2/3. Despite winning most of the time, the odds have a house edge of 3.23%, so you’ll find better value bets on craps. But even so, the house edge is reasonable compared to other bets.

Conclusion

There are other high win probabilities like Free Odds. It is a side bet in craps and, surprisingly, has no house edge. Yes, that’s right: it has a 0% house edge! You get paid at true odds.

This bet must be placed in conjunction with a Pass/Don’t Pass or Come/Don’t Come bet. Because of this, there are limits on the amount you can bet based on your pass bet. These limits will be displayed on the craps table.
