The smartphone industry is at a pivotal moment. Worldwide shipments will see a slight decline of approximately 12% in 2026, while still reporting increased market value. The manufacturers now are more concerned about profit and experience. Your device is being transformed in five directions: foldables, rollables, AI agents, innovative batteries, and better cameras.

Screens Are Bending, Rolling, and Redefining the Phone

Foldables are not a novelty anymore, but from the 2026-2028 period will be the time when designs really begin to branch out.

Apple’s first foldable iPhone (codenamed iPhone Ultra) is moving into mass production. When unfolded, it features a 7.8-inch 4:3 OLED display, which is roughly the same size as an iPad mini. Pricing is expected to be between $2,300 and $2,500… roughly double the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Samsung showed three foldables at its July 2026 Unpacked event. The Z Flip 8, Z Fold 8, and Z Fold 8 Ultra. The Z Fold 8 is a wider new shape, while the true Z Fold successor carries the Ultra name. Its 7.8-inch inner display almost exactly matches Apple’s foldable iPhone, setting up a direct rivalry.

The further future belongs to rollables. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Slide is planned for 2028, featuring a 10-inch rollable OLED panel that stretches rather than bends. Unlike foldables, this avoids the crease problem entirely—the screen stays flat when extended. Samsung has already begun converting production lines.

This means developers face a new reality: screen size is no longer fixed. An app must work on a narrow closed display, a tablet-sized open display, and every state in between.

AI Moves From Answering Questions to Doing Things

AI’s role on phones is shifting. In the past, it helped identify photos, enhance night shots, and polish texta smarter tool. Now, it’s starting to execute tasks.

Honor launched the world’s first robot phone in August 2026. It features a built-in gimbal that lets an AI agent drive the camera to rotate, track, and follow subjects. When a user states a shooting intention, the AI understands the request, calls on the camera, and completes the action. Pre-orders have surpassed 400,000 units.

Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon recently said that the industry is shifting from “phone-centric” to “agent-centric.” The starting point is now the user’s intent. An agent senses context, understands it, reasons, plans, and acts on the user’s behalf.

Samsung’s Galaxy S26 series already shows this. The upgraded assistant can complete tasks like “open Meituan, book movie tickets, call a taxi,” with the user simply reviewing and confirming. It can instantly log you into your favourite gaming platform, national casino. Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chip is built for this, with on-device models supporting up to 200 million parameters.

Batteries: Approaching the Tipping Point

Battery stagnation has been smartphones’ most persistent pain point. Silicon-carbon anode technology is changing that.

Samsung has brought silicon-carbon batteries to its latest foldables, including the Z Fold 8 Ultra, Z Fold 8, and Z Flip 8. The Z Fold 8 Ultra reaches 5,000mAh, up from 4,400mAh on the Z Fold 7. Silicon-carbon anodes store more energy than graphite, at the cost of greater swelling. This is something Samsung, scarred by the Note 7 incident, has treated with extreme caution.

More aggressive solutions are coming. According to Digital Chat Station, many Android manufacturers are testing “steel-shell batteries plus stacked cells”. They are aiming to push flagship capacities to 9,000mAh or even 10,000mAh. Apple has already adopted steel-shell batteries in the iPhone 18 Pro Max, raising capacity to 5,391mAh. Steel shells improve durability and heat dissipation, while stacked cells boost energy density.

Academic breakthroughs could deliver an even bigger leap. A team at South Korea’s Chonnam National University developed a solid-state electrolyte that solves the dendrite problem in lithium-metal batteries. In testing, a 5,000mAh battery’s active material weighed just 37.5 grams. If applied to a typical phone battery, a 10,000mAh battery could charge in minutes.

Cameras: The Sensor War Replaces the Pixel War

“How many megapixels” is no longer the core question. Sensor size, aperture, AI processing, and lens partnerships are.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 lets phones record 8K 60fps video or 4K 240fps slow-motion for the first time. The image processor is now tightly coupled with the NPU. This allows AI to process images in real time as they’re captured rather than afterwards. Each pixel carries 16 bits of data, giving phones a deeper understanding of every element in a scene.

Chinese manufacturers are pushing further on hardware. The trend is shifting from a “pixel war” to a “sensor size war”. This means fitting 1-inch sensors into phone bodies to capture more light and deliver cleaner low-light performance. Dual 200MP rear configurations are being tested by OPPO, vivo, and Xiaomi, with even a 100MP front camera appearing.
