You want to move the TV, but you find that the Sky cable on the wall is too short. Can I extend Sky cable without calling a Sky technician? Can anyone do the job?
It turns out that extending cables from the air is quite simple, and I’ll walk you through the steps below. The risk is very low with this procedure. However, if you don’t like this idea, Sky should be able to send a technician to your home to extend it for you.
Remember that they charge a surcharge for multi-room installations. Not to mention that it can take several weeks for a technician to be sent to the scene. Then why don’t you do it yourself?
To extend the air cable:
- Remove the coaxial cable from the Sky Box.
- Connect the F plug to the end of the short cable.
- Plug one end of the new cable into the F-connector.
- Lay the other end of the new cable to the Sky Box.
The steps may vary slightly depending on the settings. In most cases, a simple adapter is sufficient to extend a short cable.
Instruments and equipment for airspace augmentation
Before you begin extending the cable from the air, equipment will greatly facilitate the process. Don’t worry, none of these tools are expensive. In the next chapter, I explain how to use these tools. Here’s a short list of what you’ll need:
1 – Coaxial extension cable for satellite
Sky uses a simple coaxial cable, which you can buy in bundles at any hardware store. The above cable also contains F-connectors. You can also buy coaxial cables without F connectors, which are usually a bit cheaper.
Without the F-connectors you have to make the connectors yourself by removing the wires, and that takes more time. I recommend buying good quality coaxial cables as they last longer and the signal is more reliable.
To learn more about the coaxial cable you should buy, read our article on the best antenna cables.
2 – Press and crimp tool for coaxial cables
If you buy a wiring harness with F connectors, as in the case of the above product, you do not need this tool. However, the cable crimper allows you to cut and strip normal cables so you can connect the F connectors in seconds. This is also useful for other threads.
3 – Male type F and male type
This makes it easier to extend the coaxial cable. Screw the coaxial cable to both ends and it should work. In some cases, replacing these adapters can improve the TV or even the internet in your home.
With these tools, you can do the work of a sky engineer for them in a matter of minutes. These tools are very easy to use. Even if they are normal cables (no adapters at each end), you can attach the F connectors quite easily.
Which cable is needed to extend the Sky Q box?
Two coaxial satellite extension cables with F-connectors or plugs are required to extend the Sky Q Box. Sky Q requires two coaxial cables. So you may need to run an additional coaxial cable from the satellite, which can be inconvenient depending on the layout of your building.
Sky Q can be used with a single cable, also known as single-channel mode, but you won’t have access to the full range of services and channels. For longer term extensions it is recommended that you contact Sky.
How many Sky Q-boxes can I watch at one time?
With Sky’s Multiroom service you can, in addition to the main box, watch 2 Sky Q-boxes at the same time. If you have more than 3 Sky Q-boxes, you must disable one to continue browsing a particular box.
How do I connect two TVs to a Sky Box?
To connect two TVs to a Sky Box, you can use an HDMI splitter connected to the Box’s HDMI output. With a splitter you can connect two TVs, but watch the same media on both screens. If you want to use a TV separately, you must purchase a separate Sky device for that TV.

frequently asked questions
Can you extend the satellite cable?
The best way to extend a cable is to use an F-Trunk, which connects 2 cables with F connectors. However, this solution is not approved by Sky as they want you to replace the entire return cable to the antenna. To place multiple points in a room, use a square LNB with 2 separate wires going to each corner.
