Kohl’s is an American department store chain, the largest in the United States as of February 2013.
In addition to an impressive number of physical stores (1,158 to date), Kohl’s also operates a website for its services.
Still, both customers and employees seem to visit Kohl’s website from time to time not without good reason.
When I tried to access it, the Kohl’s website only gave an error message Access denied.
While we’re not entirely sure what causes the Kohl’s website to occasionally refuse, we do know a few tricks to get around this problem.
How do I correct the denial of access to Kohl’s?
1. Cookies deleted
If you allow cookies and other cached data to accumulate on your device, you may not be able to access certain websites.
Therefore, we recommend that you clear your browser’s cache and cookies and check if the Kohl’s access denied error still occurs.
If you want to rule out network issues, we recommend using another device on the same network to connect to Kohl’s.
If you find that a second device does access Kohl’s, the problem is clearly related to the device.
2. Restart devices
There’s a reason why tech support people always ask the same question if you’ve tried rebooting your device.
Restarting the computer, router and modem is often overlooked by novice and experienced users alike.
It has been proven countless times that a simple reboot of a problematic device can easily solve a host of problems.
Therefore, try restarting your computer and router/modem if you find that Kohl’s is not available to other devices on your network.
3. Check your firewall
No matter if you are using the built-in Windows firewall or a third-party solution, the firewall can be problematic if it starts blocking things for no reason.
So it wouldn’t be the worst idea to check if your firewall has suddenly decided to block Kohl’s.
Most users don’t bother to configure firewall rules and therefore can’t access different websites or online services.
While you’re at it, you might also want to take a look at your antivirus program and make sure it’s not restricting your web browser or Kohl’s domain.
4. Check your host file
Using a Windows host file to prevent your computer from accessing certain domains is not uncommon.
There are even some system-wide ad blockers that modify the hosts file to restrict your computer from adware and malicious domains.
Therefore, you should check that Kohl’s is not connected to your computer via a host file.
The Hosts file can be found in the following location on your computer:
C:WindowsSystem32Driversetc
Open the hosts file in a text editor and make sure the Kohl’s domain is not listed anywhere in the document.
However, it should be noted that some programs use the IP address of websites to block them in the hosts file, rather than the domain name.
We therefore recommend that you make a backup copy of the hosts file (just copy it to a safe place), then edit the original and remove anything not preceded by a #.

After you edit the file, save it and try to open the Kohl’s website again. If the problem was in the hosts file, you should now be able to access the site.
5. Use of public DNS
It’s no secret that the DNS assigned by your ISP can be limited in some ways. We therefore recommend that you switch to a public DNS service.
We used Google’s public DNS and were pleasantly surprised by the results.
We will show you how to do this, but don’t forget to save the DNS assigned by your ISP and note it somewhere in case you need it later.
If you have an automatic DNS, you don’t need to save anything.
- Right click in the start menu
- Selecting network connections
- Press the Change Adapter Settings button
- Right-click on your default internet connection
- In the context menu, choose Properties
- Double-click the Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4) option.
- Activate the Use the following DNS server addresses button
- Enter 8.8.8 in the Preference field and 8.8.4.4 in the Alternative field.
- Press the OK button.
Now you can restart the PC or clear DNS to remove the outdated data from the PC. Learn how to clear DNS in Windows 10:
- Run CMD with administrator rights
- Enter the following commands in sequence:
- ipconfig /flushdns
- ipconfig /Records
- ipconfig / Enable
- ipconfig / update
- Resetting the winsock grid
- Restart your computer
After restarting your computer, you can check whether the Kohl’s website still displays access denied or not.
6. Use VPN
