GIMP is one of the best free image editing tools you can get with Windows 10. It includes many amazing features that let you do everything from removing the background from an image to using layers to add multiple parts to an image. One of the best things about using GIMP is that it uses the FreeType 2 font engine, which supports different fonts that can be added to an image.

And while you can easily obtain font packages from various sources on the Internet, you may have difficulty installing them in GIMP. If you want to use third party fonts in your images, you have come to the right place. In this article I will show you how to easily install fonts in GIMP for use in your projects.

HOW TO INSTALL THE FONTS IN GIMP UNDER WINDOWS 10

So the first thing you need to do is download third-party fonts for GIMP. Sites like dafont and wfonts are great resources where you can find many different fonts for the platform. If you like some unusual copies, but don’t know their names, you can use the Chrome extensions to identify the fonts.

To download a new font, simply go to one of the free font websites and click on the download link.

NOTE: Downloading files from the internet carries a certain risk. Make sure you scan downloaded files with a good antivirus program before unpacking them.

Once you have the file on your system, just follow these simple steps to install the font in GIMP:

Step one: Double click on the zip file to open it.

Step two: Then extract the files it contains by clicking on the Extract button in the archive program of your choice. Or, if you only use the file explorer, you can drag and drop files to the desired location.

Step three: Right-click an OTF or TTF file and move the cursor to Open with to display all available options.

Step four: Select Windows Font Viewer from the drop-down menu below.

Step five: Click the Install button in the top right corner of the Windows Font Viewer to install the font.

The font is thus installed in Windows, which means that any program that uses OTP or TTF fonts (including GIMP) can use it.

Step six: Open GIMP and select the Fonts tab on the right toolbar. Then find the font you just added.

Step seven: If you don’t see the font, click the small tabbed button in the upper right corner and choose Scan Font List from the Fonts menu.

The newly added font must appear in the list. You can also right-click anywhere in the list to call up the scan option, or simply click on the green refresh arrow at the bottom of the list.

However, it is possible that the police are still not on the list. If this is the case, you will need to add them manually to the GIMP font folder. That’s how you do it:

Step one: Copy the TTF font file you want to add to GIMP by pressing Ctrl+C.

Step two: Navigate to the font folder.

Step three: Insert the font file at this location using the key combination Ctrl+V and assign administrator rights.

After copying the font file, reopen GIMP and update the font list. The newly added font must appear in the list.

NOTE: I tested this workaround with GIMP v.2.10.8 on Windows 10. If you are using a different version of the software, you can find a solution that suits you in the super user forum.

The best thing about this method of installing fonts in GIMP is that it is possible to install multiple fonts at the same time. Simply copy and paste the TTF or OTF files into the folder above. It’s simple, isn’t it?

TRY NEW FONTS IN

If you follow the above methods, you can easily install and use virtually any font in GIMP. However, make sure you use the right font for your project because it has the power to make or break your design. The fonts often remind me of Gary Hustwit’s documentary Helvetica.

You can also read articles on font psychology to see how fonts inspire logos. After that, you can certainly find something that fits your design. And if you don’t find anything, don’t use comic strips without irony. Anything but that.
