When Microsoft discovered that some devices were not ready for the 2004 version of Windows 10, they were moved to a compatibility layer. This is usually done to preserve the user experience.

However, avoiding Microsoft’s compatibility blocker is not always a guarantee that your device will not have compatibility issues with the Windows 10 May 2020 update. It’s a harsh reality that some users have to accept after an operating system causes sound problems on their computer.

The sound enhancements in Windows 10 2004 date back to a previous version of the operating system. A few months ago, a Windows Insider reported on Reddit that his system lost sound after upgrading to the Windows 10 2004 beta. The affected computers must now be compatible with Windows 10 version 2004, so Microsoft offered them iOS first.

The good news is that some of the affected users have resolved the issue after troubleshooting their audio equipment. Also, updating the sound card driver seems to work for others.

Why audio stops working after Windows 10 Update 2004

As mentioned earlier, a damaged and incompatible audio driver usually causes audio problems, especially after the latest Windows 10 update. A rollback or reinstallation of the audio driver with the latest version is a very useful solution.

No sound from your laptop’s speakers is a common problem, especially after the recent Windows 10 update, a number of users are reporting that there is no sound from their system’s speakers.

The most common cause of this problem is an incompatible and damaged audio driver. There are other reasons, such as. B. the fact that the November update to Windows 10 changed the microphone’s privacy settings, causing apps that accessed it to stop working and the microphone to stop working.

Sometimes external speakers can be the reason why you are reading this article on solving sound problems in Windows 10. Make sure you test it on a device other than your Windows 10 PC.

Fix sound that no longer works after upgrading to Windows 10 version 2004.

April 2021 Update:

We now recommend that you use this tool to fix the error. The tool also repairs common computer errors, protects against file loss, malware and hardware failures, and optimizes your PC for optimal performance. With this software, you can quickly fix your PC’s problems and prevent others from getting them too:

  • Step 1: Download the PC repair and optimization utility (Windows 10, 8, 7, XP, Vista – Microsoft Gold Certified).
  • Step Two: Click on the Start scan button to detect problems in the Windows registry that may be causing PC problems.
  • Step Three: Click the Fix All button to fix all issues.

Start audio troubleshooting

To troubleshoot sound or audio issues in Windows 10, run the built-in sound troubleshooter. It can automatically resolve audio playback issues.

  1. Select the Start button and enter Sound Device in the search field,
  2. In the list of results, select Troubleshooting audio playback issues and click Next.
  3. This solution automatically diagnoses and fixes audio and sound problems on your computer.
  4. Make sure the audio service is working and that your audio device is turned off or off. Also determine if the audio device is connected to the network, or correct if the audio device is not configured by default.
  5. Once the troubleshooting is complete, restart Windows and check that the sound works properly.

Restarting the Windows Audio Service

If for some reason the Windows audio service is disabled or not working, there are sound problems, audio services are not responding, etc., you need to restart the Windows audio service.

  1. Open Windows Services with service.MSC in the Run window.
  2. Search for the Windows audio service.
  3. If this works, right click and select Restart.
  4. If this does not work, right click and select Properties.
  5. Change the commissioning type to Automatic and enter service mode.
  6. Click Apply and OK to save your changes,
  7. Also check that the AudioEndpointBuilder dependency service is running,
  8. If not, right click and set autostart on startup.
  9. Make sure that Windows Audio is working properly.

Audio driver update

Faulty drivers are one of the most common causes of almost all hardware failures. If the installed audio driver is damaged or incompatible with the latest version of Windows 10, you may experience sound problems. Make sure your sound card is working properly and that the drivers are up-to-date.

  1. Press Windows + R, type devmgmt.MSC and ok to open the device manager,
  2. Expand audio, video and game controllers
  3. Select the installed audio driver and right click on it, then select Update Driver.
  4. Click Search for the drivers on your computer.
  5. Then click Select from the list of device drivers for my computer.
  6. Then click on High Definition Audio Device and click on Next.
  7. A warning message will appear, just press Yes and the driver will be updated.
  8. Restart Windows for the changes to take effect.
  9. Now check if the sound problem is solved.

Installing the audio driver

  1. Open Device Manager again and expand the audio, video, and game controllers.
  2. Right-click on the installed audio driver and select Remove.
  3. Restart the device and Windows will try to reinstall the driver.

And if that doesn’t work, try installing the drivers in compatibility mode. Compatibility mode starts the program with the settings of the previous version of Windows. Follow the steps below to install the drivers in compatibility mode and see if that helps.

  1. Download the driver from the manufacturer’s website.
  2. Right click on the driver configuration file and select Properties.
  3. Click on the Compatibility tab, check the box Run this program in compatibility mode for and select Windows 8 from the drop-down menu.
  4. Now double click on the installation file and continue with the installation.
  5. Then restart the computer and see if the problem persists.

Trying out different audio formats

In Windows, you can change the default audio format, which affects the sound quality. Sometimes the wrong format can result in no sound at all. To try another audio format

  1. Press Win + R, type mmsys.CPL, and press Enter.
  2. Select the columns you use and click Properties at the bottom.
  3. In the speaker properties, click on the Advanced tab and select a format from the drop-down menu under Default Format.
  4. Try selecting 24-bit, 44100 Hz or 24-bit, 192000 Hz and see if that solves the problem.
  5. If neither works, try 16 bits, 44100 Hz.
