Windows 10 is a very secure OS, but some people may still want to turn off their Windows Firewall. If you do not have this firewall enabled, you may receive a warning message on your screen when you connect to a new network or when you try to connect to a public Wi-Fi network at a library or coffee shop.

Not long ago, I was about to discuss the risks of a Trojan that one of my colleagues had discovered. However, I decided to do some research first. I found out that there are certain applications that would not allow me to connect to their servers in case I had activated Windows Firewall. In this article, I am going to introduce you to some of those applications and show you how to disable Windows Firewall in Windows 10.

Open Group Policy Management Console

Now, in the Group Policy Management Console window, expand the forest. Right-click on the domain in which you want to create the GPO and select Create GPO in this domain and link here…. from the context menu.

In the New GPO dialog box, type Disable Windows Firewall in the Name box and set the GPO source status to None. Press OK.

Right-click on the Disable Windows Firewall GPO (new GPO) and select Edit. The Group Policy Management Editor window opens.

Go to Computer Configuration ➜ Policy ➜ Administrative Templates ➜ Network ➜ Network Connections ➜ Windows Firewall ➜ Domain Profile.

Then double-click on the Windows Defender firewall in the right-hand frame of the window: Protect all network connections in the settings list.

Once the Windows Defender firewall is activated : The Protect all network connections dialog box will open, select Disabled, and then click OK.

You can repeat this process for the default profile settings and close the Group Policy Editor window.

The Disable Windows Firewall GPO has finally been created, and this GPO should be deployed to the computers in the domain. Follow the steps below to do this.

Step one: Return to the Group Policy Management Console and select Disable Windows Firewall GPO.

Step two: Click the Scope tab, and then click the Add button under Security Filtering.

Step three: The Select User, Computer or Group dialog box appears. In this dialog box, enter Domain Computer as the object name and click OK.

You have now deployed a GPO to all computers in the network of the chosen domain. You can run gpupdate /force in a PowerShell window on a client computer to disable the firewall for computers in the domain. This allows you to check whether or not the GPO was created and deployed correctly.

The policy is updated each time the computer is restarted, so you don’t have to run the command every so often.

Supplement

Many third-party antivirus programs offer a firewall feature to protect your computer from cyber attacks. Windows has also offered a built-in firewall since 2003, starting with Windows XP. The Windows Firewall can also be found in Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8.

The Windows firewall feature has been significantly improved in Windows 10. However, Windows Firewall can sometimes cause problems when installing applications or using certain features. In such scenarios, you can disable Windows Firewall for the entire network.

Users also disable the firewall when they use other firewall software on their computer. You can refer to the above methods to disable Windows Firewall. If you want to whitelist a particular application, the above article can also help you with that.
