Since we have been using our Macs for such a long time, we are always looking for ways to make our Macs work as long as possible. As you use your Mac, the microscopic parts of your Mac will eventually wear out. Some of these microscopic parts are easy to replace, but some are not.

When it comes to maintaining your Mac’s health, you have a lot of options. Should you buy a new MacBook or upgrade to the latest iMac model? Should you replace that aging hard drive or simply reformat your existing Mac? What about upgrading your RAM?

Your Mac is likely one of the most important pieces of technology you own, and you should take good care of it. Here’s how to help your Mac keep running smoothly.. Read more about mac maintenance 2020 and let us know what you think.

Congratulations on your purchase of a Mac! You definitely desire a computer experience that is hassle-free, quality, and simple yet functional. Now that you’ve paid a premium for one, the next step is to ensure that it continues to perform at its peak for as long as feasible.

A Mac’s internal hardware is nearly identical to that found in other recent Windows-based PCs. Until the introduction of the in-house Apple M1 chip, an ARM-based behemoth of a CPU, they all use DDR4 RAM, Intel x86 based processors, and dedicated AMD Radeon Graphics in some cases — that is, until the arrival of the in-house Apple M1 chip, an ARM-based monster of a processor.

The main difference lies in software optimization – Apple closely coordinates with other software vendors and spends heavily on R&D to make Macs as optimized as possible. MacOS is easy to navigate and not very difficult to get used to – even if you’re a new user. It can be somewhat restrictive at times, but that comes with inherent benefits – granting more security and making troubleshooting errors easier.

Returning to the topic of upkeep – On the hardware side, there’s not much you can do, and any mistakes you make when tinkering could void your warranty. Taking everything into account, here are some things you should do to extend the life of your Mac:

Get a surge protector first.

Getting a surge protector is an excellent idea if you have a desktop Mac that requires continual AC power to run.

It effectively prevents damage from being caused by abrupt voltage spikes or surges by channeling the extra voltage to the ground line. This extends the life of the Power Supply unit and, by extension, any components that rely on it for power.

2. Think about utilizing a cooling pad.

Although MacBooks are well-engineered and have excellent heat dissipation capabilities, if you run production-heavy tasks or games for longer periods of time, adding a cooling pad will almost surely extend the life of your laptop – especially if your ambient temperatures are high.

For light workloads such as online browsing, document or spreadsheet work, or watching movies, this should not be an issue.

3. Ensure that your MacBook is fully charged.

Newer models’ battery life has been improved, so you don’t have to be concerned about their longevity. If you have a battery-operated equipment, try to follow these guidelines as much as possible:

  • Allow the battery to drop to roughly 10% before charging if you don’t keep your gadget plugged in all the time.
  • If at all feasible, aim to keep your battery level between 30% and 80%. Charge and discharge as needed.
  • Unless it’s from a reputable third-party manufacturer, don’t use a non-Apple charger.
  • Keep your MacBook out of direct sunlight.

4. Get a good antivirus program from a third-party vendor.

When compared to Windows-based systems, MacOS malware is less prevalent, and MacOS programs are also less vulnerable to security breaches. So, while the chances of a malware assault are lower, that doesn’t mean you’re completely safe.

The majority of consumers infect their computers with malware by downloading dangerous email attachments, accessing previously infected external storage devices, and visiting vulnerable websites, some of which look exactly like legitimate, respectable websites.

Malware infection degrades PC performance and causes needless system resource use, resulting in system instability, crashes, file deletion, and disk space decrease.

These are some of the reasons why Bitdefender’s antivirus for Mac is a good investment. Their cybersecurity professionals work around the clock to uncover new threats and update signatures in their malware database, ensuring that your PC is always malware-free. Bitdefender Security provides real-time virus protection as well as adware blocker services, a free VPN, and Time Machine protection to prevent Ransomware assaults on your backup data.

Subscribing to an online identity monitoring service if the PC is shared by numerous family members is a smart idea – children may unwittingly divulge private information, and social media accounts are a repository of sensitive personal information.

Bitdefender digital identity protection detects social media impersonators, alerts you to privacy dangers, detects multiple email account breaches, and, most significantly, helps you keep track of where your personal information has been exposed.

5. Limit the number of apps that start up automatically when the computer is turned on.

This prevents unnecessary component strain and speeds up your Mac post booting up by killing resource-hungry apps which you don’t particularly need running in the background. This can be modified as per your requirements by de-selecting desired apps under System Preferences -> Login preferences.

6. Avoid frequently shutting down your Mac.

When you shut down your Mac, all of the data in its RAM is erased. This is really advantageous in some situations, such as when your system slows down or when you have problems like system freezes or unexpected malfunctions. Restarting the computer clears the RAM and is a quick cure for such problems. Apart from that, cleaning your RAM has no value for your machine because MacOS maintains RAM data quite efficiently.

All temporary data must be reloaded after a restart, which takes time and wastes system resources. Restarting your computer puts undue strain on your hard drive, motherboard, and power supply. Instead, put your Mac to sleep – or, as Apple describes it, ‘take a power nap.’

It takes significantly less time to wake up your Mac from sleep than it does to boot it up, there is no loss of temporary data, and resuming work is more faster and more efficient.

During a Power Nap, MacOS also executes background software maintenance activities, creates Time Machine backups, and resolves small software faults – things that wouldn’t get an opportunity to run if you turned off your computer soon after finishing your work. Increased boot times will result as a result of this. Your Mac will go into hibernation once these procedures are completed.

Lithium-ion laptop batteries benefit from a slow battery depletion, which extends the battery’s life. Even if it’s a Mac Pro, power usage while hibernating is quite low and will have no impact on your electricity expenses.

7. Miscellaneous upkeep advice

If your system is no longer under warranty, you can disassemble it to do routine hardware maintenance, such as cleaning dust from your fans and case internals. Compressed air can be used to clean your components, while a microfiber cloth can be used to clean other surfaces. Chemicals and liquids of any kind should be avoided at all costs. Place desiccant sachets in your case if you’re going to be in a humid climate.

8. If you have an older Mac, you need upgrade the hardware.

Upgrade to a solid-state drive (SSD) if you have an older Mac with a mechanical hard drive. Installing more RAM would likely improve render times if you perform a lot of rendering and productivity tasks. Before purchasing either component, make sure that it is compatible with your system and that you have enough space to install upgrades – such as slots.

Conclusion

Macs are strong, well-built, and optimized devices by default, and with regular care and maintenance, they will serve you well for a long time. This list will undoubtedly be useful for any Mac device.

For many Mac users, their Mac is their PC, or vice versa. Such is the case for some users who use one computer for work and another for pleasure. The truth is that PC health is pretty important to all computers, but that doesn’t mean that Mac users should have to be as concerned about it. Still, there are some things that you should do to keep your Mac healthy, and here’s a guide to those health concerns..
