Which Google phone should you buy when Christmas shopping?

Google pixel smartphones offer the purest Android experience, but for some reason they are not widely sold. For many consumers it’s Samsung or nothing, and that’s perfectly understandable – this company makes very good phones. However, if you prefer regular, one-time Android updates, you should choose pixels.

It is now mid-November and Christmas shopping is in full swing. Many people buy new smartphones for their loved ones – or for themselves. And if you want a pixel, you have a very difficult decision to make: do you choose pixel 5 or pixel 4a 5G? Both 5G smartphones, yes, but they’re not the same.

For example, there’s a difference of $200. But if money is not an object and you are so rich that you are unrecognizable, take a pixel 5, because it is the best phone. No further discussion is needed. I wish you a good day and congratulate you on your success.

But if you have a budget, like me, there’s a lot more to consider. I have used and tested both phones and I can safely say if I should spend the extra 200 dollars on pixel 5 or not. Because, to be honest, 200 bucks is a lot of money for us normal people.

First of all, the Pixel 5 has a wireless Qi charger and the Pixel 4a 5G does not. This means that you cannot drop 4a 5G on the charging plate and place it on the battery before going to bed. A USB-C cable must be connected instead. This is a big problem for me, because I’ve been using qi for years, but you know what’s better than wireless charging? With an extra 200 bucks in my pocket. In other words, even if it is a pleasant element, it is by no means a breach of contract.

Another big difference is the size of the screen – the Pixel4a 5G has a 6.2 inch OLED screen, while the Pixel 5 has a 6 inch OLED screen. That’s better, isn’t it? Not necessarily. Since both phones have the same resolution of 2340×1080, the smaller screen has a higher pixel density. Not to mention the fact that pixel 5 has a refresh rate of 90 Hz, comparable to that of oil, which does not have the cheapest pixel. Despite the fact that Pixel 5 has a better common screen, it doesn’t cost 200 dollars anymore. Really, 90 Hz is really great, but you can’t miss what you didn’t have. Expensive pro iPhones don’t even have that much freshness.

As far as the internal specifications are concerned, they are very similar. Both phones are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G and have 128 GB memory (and no expandable memory). The 4a 5G has 6 GB RAM, while pixel 5 has 8 GB RAM. Are the 2 GB of additional data relevant? In my test, no. The applications seem to work the same on both phones. At the same time, the 5. Pixels age better thanks to the extra memory. In other words, after a few years, after a few updates of the operating system, 4a 5G may be slightly slower than others. Again: Extra RAM isn’t worth $200.

The battery size is different: the 5. The pixel has more than 4000 mAh, compared to 3885 mAh for the 4a 5G. You would think it would be the other way around, because the 4a 5G has a larger screen, but the 90 Hz refresh rate at pixel 5 can be quite stressful, so it makes sense. In my test, however, both phones surprised me, even though there was a daily supply of juice in stock and there was no noticeable difference in normal use.

Where they’re no different, there are cameras – they have the same hardware and software – a standard 12.2 megapixel lens, a 16 megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens and an 8 megapixel front camera. Both phones take brilliant pictures with Google’s well-configured software. Unfortunately, none of them have a telephoto lens. For the front camera, both cameras do not need a centered notch to drill holes in the top left half of the screen. It’s a personal preference to know if you want to make a hole, but I quickly got used to it.

Unfortunately, they both miss the same thing: the speakers. None of the phones are particularly noisy and in general they are not very comfortable for music or movies. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not great, but it’s not great either. You can use headphones. When pixel 4a 5G differs from pixel 5, a 3.5 mm audio jack is included – pixel 5 is limited to USB-C or Bluetooth.

Where pixel 5 stands out the most is its impenetrability. Unfortunately pixel 4a 5G does not exist. Pixel 5 has an IP68 rating, which means that it can be temporarily submerged and survive, while 4a 5G risks becoming a clipboard in this scenario. This can be an important factor if you live near water, especially if the weather on the beach is year-round like in Florida.

After all, no difference between the phones is worth $200 more, but if you add them all up, they can be worth it. The Pixel 5 has the best display with 90 Hz refresh rate, wireless charging, waterproof and more memory. The only advantage of the 4a 5G is that it costs 200 dollars less and is equipped with a headphone jack.

Despite all the advantages of the 699 Pixel 5 (that’s the best phone), I still recommend the Pixel 4a 5G to most consumers. You see, times are tough, and at $499, the 4a 5G pixel is simply an unbeatable size. You’ll get almost the same experience as with Pixel 5, including regular updates for Android, but for $200 less. For those who have to buy a few phones for their family, that will really be the case.

Finally, although I like and recommend both phones, you should probably get a Pixel 4a 5G and not look back. You’ll love it. In that sense, you can’t go wrong with any of the new pixels. Google made two home runs here.

You can buy an unlocked 4a 5G pixel here for $499 and an unlocked 5 pixel here for $699. Both phones are compatible with Mint Mobile’s available rates (including 5G at no extra charge) from $15 per month. Here you can register at La Monnaie.
